“This is actually the fourth structure on this site. St. Barnabas Church was first built in the late 1800’s, I’m guessing where Pushing Petals and Framed on 5th are at now.

The original wood structured church was built in 1906 and featured members of the Riley family in the congregation. That was knocked down and the first stone church was built in 1912. There’s a lot of history in these walls, especially considering that the church suffered a fire in 1957. The stain glass and woodwork behind the altar survived and were incorporated into the current church.

Thomas Riley and his wife Georgiana Hounsfield are interred in a tomb in the memorial garden out back. Ezra Riley’s daughter is also buried along side the tomb, she died at a year old.

We could spend a week going through all the dedications and guests that this building has had over the last century.” Gloria McCracken, Staff Administrator of St. Barnabas Anglican Church

“What do I like about this neighbourhood? It’s home. I immigrated here in the 1970’s from Britain and there were so many houses for sale… People were moving to new neighbourhoods like Silver Springs but all along, it’s felt like home. We’ve seen all kinds of changes to the community over the years, but the trend I like the most is seeing people working in their own gardens and green spaces.” Kate

“When I first got here, I moved around to a few different neighbourhoods and eventually I settled in Sunnyside. It’s troubling to see the neighbourhood be bought up by real estate speculators – it makes it difficult for younger families to move here. We used to have all kinds of events like the outdoor movie in the park over there (pointing to the TRUCK/CSIF Bike-in Cinema). I’m not sure why we stopped doing them, but it sure is nice to see it happening again.” Ken

“Her name is Strawberry. She gave birth to a litter of 14 puppies at a really young age, but 7 of them were still-births. There were so many that she needed to have a c-section. At that point, the breeder decided that she didn’t need to be put through any more trauma, so I got her. Now she’s 8 years old and the best lap dog ever.”

Slide The City comes to Calgary! This 300 metre water slide was setup on 10th Street NW and is the focal point of Hillhurst-Sunnyside’s “Beach In The City” event. Despite the controversy surrounding it, thousands of people enjoyed sliding down the road over two days of festivities under 30°c heat.

“There’s a lady up the street who helps out the homeless people in the neighbourhood. She gives us clothes, food, and sometimes some extra money to get by. I saved some change and bought her this card for her birthday and I’m having everyone I meet sign it to show her how much she means to us.

Yeah, I know – we all have problems. I’m homeless, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not human being. Want to sign the card?” John

“I used to live in this neighbourhood. There’s a good vibe about it, people here are into this kind of thing.

This is an event organized by TRUCK Contemporary Art and Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers, and Quickdraw Animation Society. We’ve got this great camper to do this with, but it broke down – fortunately we had a back-up plan that pulled through.

It’s great to see a turn-out like this. Calgary is pretty receptive to movies in the park, especially the growing bike community.” Jeremy Pavka, Programming Coordinator, TRUCK Contemporary Art

“I was sitting right here a couple of days ago when these two guys started fighting. This one guy was just beating the hell out of the other one, so I jumped in.

I got them separated and just held the one guy there. He said he was done fighting, but I could tell that he was ready to go again. I think the scrap was about money or something. I knew if I let him go, he’d start punching the other guy, so I just held them there for his own good. Eventually the cops came and sorted it out. It could have ended up way worse.

That’s the thing about people: you gotta look after them, even when they don’t know how to look after themselves, y’know? Jump in and do the right thing. It also helps when you’ve been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as long as I have.”

“Completed in 1911 at an estimated cost of $3,500, this Edwardian commercial structure was originally named for its owner, Yorshire-born John Smith, who died the year it was built. Early businesses in the Smith Block, such as the Hillhurst Confectionary and Ice Cream Parlor (1921-32), the Model Meat Market (1926-28) and the Hillhurst Shoe Hospital (1930-52), reflected the quiet, working-class character of the neighbourhood they served.

Walt Healy, whose landmark motorcycle dealership on Tenth Street NW later made him a household name in Calgary, lived in one of the upstairs apartments in 1934-35. The building was renamed the Hillhurst Block after Alma Smith, John’s widow, sold it in 1925.”

“What do I like about this neighbourhood? Here’s something: everyone likes to share. You can tell it’s a community because even the businesses keep it local. The staff from other bars come here when they need shifts and vice-versa.

Also, you see the same regulars, same staff… and they all take care of each other. Keep it local. That’s the way things are in Sunnyside.” Stu Connor, Owner of Oak Tree Tavern.
