“Shooting a picture of the crane, eh? Yeah it’s pretty cool how they build those things. I suppose over here it’s ‘what goes down down, must come up’, I mean about the old houses. I wonder where I heard that before…
Have a good day!”

“It’s our one year anniversary! I planned Pie Cloud so long before I opened it that it’s hard to believe sometimes that it exists. It’s really about our friends and neighbours who come here and support us. We’re really thankful for everyone’s support. This is our way of celebrating one year and saying thanks.
It’s really cool to see an idea take off and be a part of other people’s lives. It’s hard to believe for me that you make something up and it becomes important to other people.
Well, we’re eccentric people and we seem to have found like-minded people who are into what we’re doing here; people who aren’t looking for a franchise or that sort of thing. That’s what Kensington is. It’s a little eccentric place and that’s special.
I lived in Kensington back when I was in my 20’s, but moved into the suburbs when I had the kids. All these years later, I’m back here in the neighbourhood. There’s something about this place that just gets into you and stays. It’s kind of neat how it all worked out.” Maureen DePatie, owner of Pie Cloud (centre), with children Mason, (left) and Mackenzie (right). Pie Cloud is located at 314 10 Street NW.
Alberta Burger Fest is on now!
This wicked creation is the Pie Burger from Pie Cloud. PieBurger starts with a crisp, savoury pie crust base. Inside rests a melange of everything one expects in a great burger – premium Alberta beef, Alberta bacon, house made barbecue sauce, cheese (smoked gouda and cheddar), fresh tomato and greens. Mixed amid those ingredients is one of our fave burger toppings, a perfectly cooked egg, as well as a dollop of onion jam we crafted with a bottle from Calgary’s own Dandy Brewing Company. A fresh-baked bun crowns the creation.
Burger Fest is a celebration of Alberta Agriculture, Talent and Business and Charity.
I think I finally found a photograph that acts as a metaphor for what I’m trying to say with this project. With just over six weeks to go, this oak tree tells a story that so many of us are resisting to listen to: the old gives way to the new. The old leaves don’t know what direction the tree will grow in once they’re gone, it’s up to the young risers to carry on the legacy and do what’s right for the tree. The old quite literally gives way to and guides the young.
Speaking of trees, the poplars all around Hillhurst and Sunnyside are getting quite old and are being succeeded by new growth. I wonder how the neighbourhood will look in fifty years. I suppose that’s the exciting part…
It’s official! Spring is in full springiness, and I’ve got fifty days left to go on #Sunnyside365 (+1 if you count the leap year). I can’t say how wonderful of an experience it’s been, because words can’t describe the overwhelming feelings I have. Thanks to all the support from everyone who has been involved, liked, shared, commented. I’m truly, truly overwhelmed. Calgary really is the greatest city in the world.
The landscape of Sunnyside and Kensington changes so fast, it’s hard to remember sometimes what it looked like before. Two years ago, I shot a photo of the 10th street strip, knowing that it would look remarkably different. I wonder what it will look like two years ago from now, or twenty years from now.

“We need life! We need youth! We need young families to make this place home! It can’t just be a neighbourhood for the old and crotchety (ha ha, like me) or the young hipsters. Who is going to play in the playgrounds? Who’s going to go trick-or-treating? Who is going to participate in the Community Association events?
You see, that’s the real question we should be asking. How do we make this neighbourhood more viable for young families?”
