“There’s a lady up the street who helps out the homeless people in the neighbourhood. She gives us clothes, food, and sometimes some extra money to get by. I saved some change and bought her this card for her birthday and I’m having everyone I meet sign it to show her how much she means to us.

Yeah, I know – we all have problems. I’m homeless, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not human being. Want to sign the card?” John

“I was sitting right here a couple of days ago when these two guys started fighting. This one guy was just beating the hell out of the other one, so I jumped in.

I got them separated and just held the one guy there. He said he was done fighting, but I could tell that he was ready to go again. I think the scrap was about money or something. I knew if I let him go, he’d start punching the other guy, so I just held them there for his own good. Eventually the cops came and sorted it out. It could have ended up way worse.

That’s the thing about people: you gotta look after them, even when they don’t know how to look after themselves, y’know? Jump in and do the right thing. It also helps when you’ve been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as long as I have.”

“The bike infrastructure in Calgary is headed in the right direction. I can ride from one end of the city to the other and stay on a bike path the entire time. It’s wonderful to see people advocating to make Calgary more bike friendly. Cyclepalooza? Bike awards? I love it!” – Greg Clark, Alberta Party MLA – Calgary-Elbow.

The building at 1126 Kensington Road was constructed in 1926 to be the home of Calgary’s Freemason Lodge (to be fully established in 1927).

The cornerstone (which was placed in 1926) was later relocated in the more recently built Masonic lodge on 12th avenue SW. The site was decommissioned as a meeting hall when the new meeting hall was built in 1984. The building was renovated extensively for retail use in 1995.

These days, the address is home to one of the neighbourhood’s favourite coffee shops, Higher Ground. Naked Leaf Tea Shop has their establishment and small patio (best kept secret!) around the west side.

Next time you’re in the vicinity, see if you can find the 3, 5, and 7 steps of King Solomon which are common in many Masonic structures!

“I’m leaving for Montreal today. I’m riding the bike there. Maybe I’ll stop in Chicago. I’m at the Roasterie almost every – I’ll miss the people there. See you in a couple weeks.”
