“My business partner, Connor, founded Local Laundry about a year ago. He was in Sweden doing his MBA and while he was over there, he realized that he didn’t have anything to wear that repped’ Calgary. We partnered up back in November with the goal of inspiring pride of this city and the neighbourhoods people are a part of. We donate a part of our proceeds to local charities.

The Sunnyside and Kensington Shirts were designed by Erin Lawrence. She’s a graduate of ACAD and lives in the neighbourhood.

I love how much of a “Go out and do it.” attitude this city has. It’s very entrepreneurial. And Kensington–it’s super vibrant here. People in this community are really proud of where they live and work. It’s a destination of choice. Meraki Supply Co. has the Kensington and Sunnyside shirts, Luke’s Drug Mart has snap-back hats, and a place called ‘Stuff 4 Him’ has some of our items out in the belt line.” Dustin, Co-Founder of Local Laundry Apparel. www.locallaundryapparel.com

It’s official! Spring is in full springiness, and I’ve got fifty days left to go on #Sunnyside365 (+1 if you count the leap year). I can’t say how wonderful of an experience it’s been, because words can’t describe the overwhelming feelings I have. Thanks to all the support from everyone who has been involved, liked, shared, commented. I’m truly, truly overwhelmed. Calgary really is the greatest city in the world.

“The facade of the Pages building was redone in 1993, but the interior still has the same creaky wooden floors as when it was the first branch library of the Calgary Public Library in 1947. This building has literary bones!

We offer over 10,000 titles in stock at any given time and, through our special order service, we can access most North American titles in print. Our booksellers are all avid readers – they can help you track down that volume you need, suggest a book for your child’s birthday present, suggest titles for your book club, or simply get you a great book to read on a quiet Sunday afternoon.”

“I think this is the earliest start to the Summer we’ve ever seen. So many people have their gardens planted and ready. I just hope we don’t get a dump of snow before the Summer actually gets here. Mind you, I could have used a few more snowboarding sessions.”

“I don’t care. I want the cracks, the rust, the gnarled old trees. I want the seediness, the wear and the tear. We earned it, as a community. We wear it with pride. What’s going to happen in a few years when this place gets so redeveloped that it’s not recognizable as Sunnyside anymore? What are they all going to come down and see?”

“I can’t wait for all the construction to be over. I just want eight weeks of peace and quiet. I think I’m owed that.” The Kensington Sidewalk improvements, although quite needed and welcome, wear down the nerves of the pedestrians and business owners who continue to endure them.

“You can take a picture The Hulk, he’s a pretty popular site to see. I guess he’s actual life-size from the comics. Hey, Free Comic Book Day is coming on May 7. You should let people know about that. But yeah, just go ahead and shoot what you like.” Another Dimension Comics, 10th Street NW

“The brain child of a group of Calgary locals with a passion for business and a love of pop culture, Gummi opened its doors in December 2011 and has already established a cult following. An inevitable fun house of candy, odd toys and wacky gifts Gummi is guaranteed to make you smile.

Now with locations in Kensington and our brand new spot Whyte Ave in Edmonton.

To all our regulars we thank you for sharing our love and helping us improve along the way. To those who we haven’t met yet…we can’t wait to see you.” Gummi Boutique on 10th Street NW, www.gummiboutique.ca
