Higher Ground Cafe on the evening of Saint Patrick’s Day offers a refuge from the celebrations and revelry that the holiday has become synonymous with.
Open late and serving up wonderful beverages and food, Higher Ground is a wonderful and welcome little space in Kensington.
“I love the development in this neighbourhood. We need it. Badly. I mean, with the insane cost of business for some of these folks here–we need the residents.
And another thing: more people in the neighbourhood means more demands on services. Maybe some of these businesses will have an incentive to stay open later. I mean, do have any idea how far I have to walk to get a pack of smokes after 9pm?”
“She made these mittens herself at home. As soon as people found out that they were home made, everyone wanted a pair. I tell you–home made mittens.”
“The sun is out, the clouds are clearing… spring is here. I can taste it!”
“When you walk through this neighbourhood, you learn to walk slower, there’s so much to see–all throughout the year. And you may bump into somebody you know!”
Spring time is approaching! Kensington Road offers pedestrians one of the best experiences that you can have with two feet and a heartbeat!
The outdoor piano is a wonderful little art installation, albeit tragically out of tune. Nevertheless, it doesn’t stop the odd passerby from hitting a few notes on the keys.
“Are you a photographer?”
Yup!
“Are you famous?”
Not really.
“Making money?”
Um, sort of.
“Here, take a picture of this!”

Another one of the charming little homes in Sunnyside, this one sits next to the Sunnyside LRT Platform. Famous for the vintage car ‘art project’ parked out front, the old truck as a front lawn feature as well as countless little curiosities all over the property.
“I’m a journalism student at Mount Royal University. I graduate in June. This is my sixth shift at Molly Malone’s.
I love Kensington. It’s dynamic. It feels very creative here. There’s just this energy about it. It’s kind of unlike any other neighbourhood in Calgary.” Hannah, Server at Molly Malone’s Pub, Kensington.
“This is Theo. He was born 03/03/03. He just celebrated his thirteenth birthday a couple days ago. He’s hard of hearing and he doesn’t walk so far anymore but hey, neither do I. Ha!”
